The Rocasolano Institute of Physical Chemistry was set up in 1946 at same time as the . Its holdings come from the "National Institute of Physics and Chemistry" created in 1932. Commonly known as the Rockefeller Institute, it was the cradle of all the research teams in the different disciplines of Chemistry, not only in Madrid, but throughout Spain. The holds 842 journal titles, of which 227 are active, 113 are complete starting from the first issue, 11 date from the 19th century to our days, and 16 start prior to 1920. Since its genesis, the was organized in a way that was revolutionary for those days, free access was permitted, and display stands facilitated access to the latest numbers and the previous year’s issues of the journals. is considered by the scientific community as the Reference Scientific Periodical Library and is obviously one of the most outstanding scientific libraries in Europe.

  Digital Identity and Search Engine Optimization (Seo)

Year 2009

At the end of 2008 the project ,    was born, and consolidated during 2009. This project consisted in the creation of a digital identity as well as the recognition of an on-line brand for the library of the Rocasolano Institute (CSIC) which belongs to the CSIC Library Network. Its dissemination was supported on the web by the new digital resources offered by web 2.0. The main cornerstone of the project is a blog which includes news on science, technology and innovation which are viralized via Facebook, twitter and RSS.

This first year ended with some quite satisfactory results: we achieved an average of 400 readers per day and 7,000 per month. In this first year we had more than 26,000 visits and 800 news items published. It is worth noting that our work was rewarded by the European Union as the Best Blog “European Year of Creativity and Innovation” in 2009, giving recognition, identity and prestige in the Spanish speaking community on the internet as a medium to disseminate news in the areas of science and technology.

Year 2010

During this year we consolidated the editorial line of the blog and expanded the area of our social networks to reach a larger number of readers and to obtain greater recognition for on the Net. For this reason, in the middle of last year we opened a new communication channel with our users via short messages such as Twitter.

Thanks to the viralizing digital structure created ad hoc to achieve our goals, in 2010 we duplicated the news published reaching 1,693 publications, with an average of 120 per month. Favouring the positioning of the brand in the Google navigator with 10,500 results, obtaining around 150,000 visits per year and exceeding 30,000 visits in the last few months, we are forecasting for 2011 an increase of 30 per cent per month

Observing the results of the statistics and finding that the visits to the blog were three times more than those to the web, we decided to duplicate the content about the library in the blog of the , so that our users would have more information on our sphere of activity and access to databases managed by the library.

At the same time, during 2010 we observed a 2 per cent increase in the number of visits from mobile phones, tablets and personal multimedia devices, and we investigated the possibility of making all our information and content available to Smartphones by developing various applications for iPhone and Nokia.

Considering the wide variety of platforms, operative systems, multimedia terminals and applications shops, we decided to go for a multiplatform “Mobile Web”, which is independent of the terminal from which the visit is made and which is accessible at http://biqfr.blogspot.com

This way, we are bringing to mobile phones or smart terminals information on the activity of the library, the daily news published in the blog, communication in our social networks, and making it possible to consult the "A to Z" database of electronic books and journals that we manage from , or to carry out searches in the database which includes more than 2,700 scientific news items published to date (16/02/2011).

For 2011, we are working to facilitate not just the consultation of databases, but also to allow researchers from CSIC and from other related centres to download e-Books and journal articles on any mobile phone from any place in the world.

  Document supply: Inter librarian loan (ILL)

The quick service and the wealth of its holdings, has consolidated the as the main document supplier centre at CSIC. The ILL is the library key quality’s indicator.

Over the last years, the flow of internal transactions among CSIC libraries has dropped 35% compared for 2001-2003, due to the technological development and the collective contracting by CSIC of the large packages of electronic resources which the main publishers have provided and others Institutions. Nevertheless the number of documents supplied to other institutions, has remained stable. Some 255 external Institutions utilize the ILL service. The level of use decrease of total transactions between 2007 and 2008 is only 0.80%, by the other hand, increase between 2009 and 2010 is 2.1%, so we think this service has stabilized, even it is increasing.

During 2009: Total transaction was 3,680 (supplied and requested) Of which 3,197 documents were delivered (-2.6 % lower than 2008); of these 1,708 being supplied to CSIC’s library Network (6% higher than 2008) and 1,489 to other institutions (-10.1 lower than 2008). Whereas 658 documents (65% higher than 2008) were requested from other libraries, of which 396 (58.4% higher than 2008) came from CSIC's network and 262 (76% higher than 2008) from other institutions. 165 documents were requested to Subito. The increase of requested documents is occasional.

During 2010: Total transaction was 3,936 (both supplied and requested) Of which 3,521 documents were delivered (7.3 % higher than 2009); of these 1,798 being supplied to CSIC’s library Network (5.2% higher than 2009) and 1,723 to other institutions (15% higher than 2009). Whereas 415 documents (-37.5 lower than 2009) were requested from other libraries, of which 210 (-47% lower than 2008) came from CSIC's network and 205 (-21.8% lower than 2008) from other institutions, with 105 documents came from Subito.

The number of book loaned to users was 81 in 2009 and 70 in 2008. The decrease of book loaned will be due to the e-Books.

  Support and dissemination of e-Books

To help our readers become familiar with e-Books, has started the loan service for eBook readers. Two iRex electronic ink readers were acquired and a presentation was organized to present the service.

In addition, it was considered of interest to involve the libraries belonging to the CSIC Library Network. In May 2009 organized a course on “The digital book in the library environment”, in which the main scientific publishers participated (Elsevier, Springer, Wiley,Taylor & Francis, Oxford University Press). The aim of the course was to make known to libraries in the CSIC Library Network the potential of e-Books and make decisions for their integration in the library collections on the Net. The result was the integration of 5,707 e-Books in the CSIC digital collection with access from all the libraries of the network. created an Excel file with the titles, URLs, ISBNs, etc., for its dissemination and to act as a news bulletin.

In May 2010, continuing with our aim of dissemination and exchange of opinions, a workshop on e-Books organized by Swets in collaboration with the Libraries Unit, the Tomas Navarro Tomas Library and was held. The interest provoked by the event was significant and brought together a total of 150 people from different areas of the country, belonging to 57 entities both public and private, mainly professionals from, the field of information science, libraries and users. The subjects addressed were approached from the point of view of the publisher / producer of eBooks, the subscriptions agent, from the point of view of the library and the problem of the centralized acquisition of e-Books, as well as future tendencies of e-Books and readers, formats, platforms, statistics, Web 3.0 applications, etc.

This year, the Coordination Unit was in charge of the acquisition of e-Books, the libraries of the network not being involved in the selection of books due to budget cuts. 4,000 new e-Books were added.

Along the same lines, an e-Books section was opened in the blog, with posts on all points of view regarding them.

  Supply and dissemination of e-resources access

The Links to on-line resources are negotiated by IP’s recognition. There are two independent information access points one for e-journals and another one for e-Books. Establishment of e-journal management system: is provided by the Management System "A to Z," creating an ubiquitous and unique access point that provides quick, easy permanent links to the library’s own resources, the CSIC’s general resources, as well as those of the free access.

The e_journals "A to Z" holds 6,311 e_journals titles in 2008 and moreover 11,308 titles s in 2010. Shibboleth protocol as a single access, regardless of where the user connects, has been implementing gradually by the publishers. This access has not been managed through "A to Z".

Users are used to the application. 36,497 sessions were been made in 2009. and 30,497 in 2010. The connection time by session is hold with a slightly decrease 107’ in 2009 and over 2 h. in 2010.

The number of pages visited per session is 17 (2009) and 16 (2010). This tool has been the main access point to electronic journals. Whereas the number of session decreased, moreover the connection times and visited pages didn’t hardly change.

Establishment of e-Books management system: The is focusing its efforts on buying e-Books over print books. The e-Books collection "A to Z" held 2,153 e-Books in 2008 and 11,549 e-Books in 2010. The use of this collection has been increasing gradually and in the same way that e-journals use.

Databases the most used databases are el Scifinder and ISI Web of Knowledge.

  Standard Management

Due to the disintegration of the Cindoc, some of its library holdings have been annexed by the . These holdings include; 26 current journals with the on-line access; 36 closed journals completing some of our collection. At the same time the holding had been expurgated to send to Granado. The has been continued the work of technical process, collections control, organization of holding and signaling, etc.
