 ActivityReport

The target of this stage has been to begin transforming the BIQFR into a center of resources for the development of the investigation, the putting together of the knowledge and of the activities related to the functioning of the IQFR and the Institution in its set, to turn into the on-line reference library in sciences, preserving its funds printed for the future generations.
To reach its targets, it has begun being adapted la BIQFR to the new technological changes that are emerging, focusing on its efforts in two main work lines.

Strategic targets

  • To turn the web of the BIQFR into the room of virtual reading.
  • The diffusion and visualization of the BIQFR has been another work line.
  • Service of document delivery (PI)
  • Traditional management.

AXTERISCO verdeTo turn the web of the BIQFR into the room of virtual reading:

With a service 24 hours, 7 days a week, from any part that the user finds by means of:

  • The Web page BIQFR (http://www.biblioteca.iqfr.csic.es) completely remodelled, with a new design and structure tailored to the objective of making the main resources in the area of physics, chemistry, biomedicine and mathematics available. The links to electronic journals and e-Books are negotiated by IP’s recognition. Two independent information access points have been created: one for e-journals and an other one for e-Books.

  • Management of electronic journals:  On-line full-text access to scientific journals is provided by the Management System "A to Z," creating an ubiquitous  and unique access point that provides quick, easy permanent links to the library’s own resources, the  CSIC’s general resources, as well as those of the free access which are relevant to the Institute’s activity. Over the last two years, users have gotten used to the application. 51,107 sessions were been made in 2007. Whereas the number of sessions was slightly lower (43.784) in 2008, the connection time increased considerably form 27' in 2007 to 2h. in 2008. Moreover, the number of pages visited per session increased from 6 in 2007 to 19 in 2008. These statistics testify to the growth of the applications use and its conversion into the main access point to electronic journals.

There have been managed 2. 536 accesses to the electronic magazines across PAPI (Point of Access of Producers of Information) with the publishers, agregadores and information suppliers, giving an ubiquity character (deslocalización) to the BIQFR.

The magazines of Science Direct have developed the protocol Shibboleth as the only form of access independently from which the user gets connected. Any user of the library has access to the resources hired by the BIQFR and the CSIC from the outside of the Institution, across internal Web of the library at any time and from any place.

  • Agent of electronic books (e-Books): From the ends of 2007 the BIQFR has begun to buy e-Books the main scientific publishers, prioritizing its buy opposite to the role. An access to the e-Books has been implemented likewise the magazines.

Between 2007 and 2008, they were bought 1806 e-Books and 101 books in role (printbook). The form of buy of the eBooks depends on the publisher. Those of Springer and Elsevier were acquired by bundles, while those of Taylor and Francis and Wiley could be chosen between its respective catalogs: pick and mix. The use of these collections has been increasing progressively. It is believed that the ideal use of a collection is 20 %. In case of the books bought to Springer during the year 2008 its use was 33,4 % in Chemistry and 21,74 % in Physics.

On the other hand, in the books that were bought of a selective form, as they can be those of Wiley, its use is even major. In 2008, the Collection of eBooks of Wiley is 325 e-Books (246 bought ones by the BIQFR and 79 by the remaining libraries of the Network of Libraries of the CSIC) and 82,15 % of the eBooks has already been used one day. Of these eBooks 100 have been used more than 12 times. The accesses from the outside of the Institution been 324. Most of the accesses to the e-Books, as it happens with the magazines they have been formalized from the proper page of the library with the agent of electronic books "A to Z".

The has managed a digital collection formed by magazines and books: 6. 311 e-journals and 2. 153 eBooks. 80,21 % was acquired by the BIQFR and 19,79 % for the remaining libraries of the Network of the CSIC.
TheBIQFR most used databases have been the Scifinder and the Web ISI of Knowledge.

AXTERISCO verde The diffusion and visualization of la BIQFR has been another work line

From the ends of 2008 it is provided with a unit of I+D+i in charge of the development and integration of the services of science popularization.
It creates its own logo and slogan  slogan peq02  with what wants to meet to understand its new vision of the BIQFR. To manage to improve the visibility its own domain has been created in Internet http://www.biblioteca.iqfr.csic.es  Conscious of the absence of communication with its readership in this new stage, where the user scarcely uses the reading room and turns into one “e_user,” it has used the hardware that the information technologies and web2. 0 it puts it at our disposal. It creates a blog with which it keeps its readership of the last innovations informed in the fields of its interest and where e_users its opinions could announce them.

AXTERISCO verde Document delivery. Interlibrary loan (PI)

As in the previous years, it continues the tendency in the descent of the document delivery (PI) between the libraries of the network due to the progressive increase of electronic resources.
The agility in the service and the wealth of its funds they have consolidated the BIQFR like the main center supplier of documents of the CSIC. The PI is an indicator of the quality of the library.

In the latter years there has descended the flow of the internal deals between the CSIC libraries, up to 35 % in the period 2001-2003, due to the development of the Tics and the hiring of collective form for CSIC of the big bundles of electronic resources to finished text that the main publishers have offered. Nevertheless, the number of documents given other Institutions, it has stayed stable. 225 external Institutions use the service. The percentage descent of the entire deals between 2007 and 2008 it is 0,80 %, for what it is possible to go so far as to think about the standardization of this service.

 activity clip image032

In 2007 the given documents were 3680 and the documents requested other libraries were 265 (167 to the proper libraries of the network of CSIC and 98 to other institutions) In 2008 there were given 3281 requests, of which there requested others library 399 (250 to libraries of the network and 149 to other institutions). The scarce number of documents that the BIQFR has to request to other libraries credits it as practically autosufficient and effectively in the adequacy of its collections to the scientific activity of the Institute. From November, 2006 one began requesting requests to Sudden (cooperation Service interlibrarian of international ambience) with what the requests that we request receive a maximum term of 48 hs.

The term in which the  sends the requested document ranges between 2 at 24 hours. The mailing format is PDF.
The personal books loans haveBIQFR been 171 copies in 2007 and 149 copies in 2008.
The funds of the BIQFR are integrated to the collective catalog of the CSIC, contributing to its maintenance. The fund of its monographs is 9248 copies, with an increase of 633 monographs in role in this two-year period. Some of the funds of the library of the Institute of Biochemistry: Methods in Enzymology, Biochemistry (1962-1983) Journal of Biological Chemistry (1918-1944), Annual Review of Biochemistry (1940-1976) were annexed to the funds of the BIQFR on having eliminated the Institute, with what it was possible to complete and to enrich these only collections in Spain. The selection of the procurement realizes the commission of the library after evaluating the scientific innovations and the needs of the investigators of the Institute.
