The Institute of Physical chemistry Rocasolano was founded in 1946 at the same time that the Library . Its funds came principally from the "National Institute of Physicist and Chemist” created in 1932, known popularly like Rockefeller, since part of the expenses of construction was supported by this Foundation, which was the cradle of all the groups of investigation in the different disciplines of the Chemistry, not only in Madrid, but in the whole Spain.

The is considered to be a landmark in the scientific history of the country and worthy of the biggest protection like Cultural property, and can turn into "Historic Landmark" for the relevancy of its collection of scientific magazines.

The  possesses 822 qualifications of magazines of which 209 are opened, and of them, 113 are finished from the number 1 of its publication, 11 from the XIXth century until our days, and 16 previous ones 1920. Between these ancient and only collections in Spain we emphasize Annalen der Physik, Chemische Berichte and Annalen der Chemie, magazines in which the first advances register in the German Organic Synthesis, in its moment, the most prestigious in the whole Europe.

Part of these works was devoting itself to the preparation and study of new colourings, with what there was established the strong chemical industry of Germany, origin to a great extent of the wealth of this country. A small sample of what it is possible to find in these magazines:

• Description of new concepts that revolutionized the Theoretical Physics: theory of Einstein's relativity, beginning of suspense of Heisenberg, quantum mechanics and wave equation of Schrödinger etc.
• Theories that ended in new instruments of surgical utility: Nuclear Magnetic resonance, Láseres etc.
• Structural studies and of synthesis of β-lactama, basic nucleus of the antibiotics.
• Description of methods of preparation of organic compounds, hormones, vitamins, antihipertensores, antimaláricos, antidepressants.
• Description and characterization of new materials, which they have contributed to the creation of artificial, material fibres with improved properties.
• Synthesis of new catalysts that improve the preparation of chemical matters and its industrial application: petroleoquímica, drugstore, herbicides, food, detergents, cosmetics.

Also they are of emphasizing the series specialized like "Advances in Chemical Physics", "Annual Review of Physical Chemistry”, important collections like Gmelin, stage, Handbook and works of reference.

Already from its origins the it was designed by an innovative management for its epoch: Free access, exhibitors for the last numbers and last year. By everything it previously exhibited the is considered, by the scientific community to which it serves, like the excellent Scientific Newspaper archive and undoubtedly one of the best of Europe.

Continuing the innovative tendency that has always characterized the , the hardware has been improved for the use of its funds and implemented new ways of managing the information:

  Web page of the  http://www.iqfr.cisc.es that is updated constantly and in her the main resources are gathered in the field of physicist, chemist, biomedicine and mathematics. Its linkage to the electronic magazines is managed by means of IPs recognition. The only access to information portal has been created.

  Implementation of an Agent of electronic magazines: From November, 2004 the access to "on-line" scientific magazines to finished text is realized across the Management system + “A to Z,” creating the only and ubiquitous point of entry that provides rapid and simple stable linkage so much to the own funds of the library, to the common ones of the CSIC, and to those of free access of thematic interest of the activity of the Institute.

4.096 accesses have been managed across PAPI (Point of Access of Producers of Information) with the publishers, agregadores and information suppliers, giving an ubiquity character (deslocalización) to the . Any user of the library can gain access to the resources hired by the  from the outside of the Institution, across internal Web of the library at any time and from any place.

The  has managed a digital collection formed by magazines and books: 6981 e-journals and 61 e-books to finished text. We emphasize the special emphasis that the  has put on the acquisition of the files (Backfile) of the most excellent providers for the Institute: Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Journal Archive (from 1841), American Chemical Society (ACS) from 1879, American Physical Society (APS / AIP) from 1893, ScienceDirect (Elsevier) and Wiley Interscience Backfiles.

The progressive increase of the use of the electronic resources, necessary it has influenced the service of loan and the appearance of a new type of user of the library: The virtual user or "e-user"

  Document delivery. Interlibrary loan (PI):

The agility in the service and the wealth of its funds they have consolidated the  like the main center supplier of documents of the CSIC. The PI is an indicator of the quality of the library.

In the latter years there has descended the flow of the internal deals between the CSIC libraries, up to 35 % in the period 2001-2003, due to the development of the Tics and the hiring of collective form for CSIC of the big bundles of electronic resources to finished text that the main publishers have offered. Nevertheless the number of documents given other Institutions, it has stayed stable. 225 external Institutions use the PI service.

In 2005 the given documents were 4615, and the documents requested other libraries were 222 (151 to the proper libraries of the network of CSIC and 71 to other institutions) The scarce number of documents that  has to request to other libraries credits it as practically autosufficient and effectively in the adequacy of its collections to the scientific activity of the Institute.

The term of mailing of the requested document ranges between 2 at 24 hours. The mailing format is PDF or TIFF using in most of the cases the program of transmission of documents Ariel.

The funds of the are integrated to the collective catalog of the CSIC, contributing to its maintenance. The fund of its monographs is 7350, with an increase of 233 monographs in this two-year period. The selection of the procurement realizes the commission of the library after evaluating the scientific innovations and the needs of the investigators of the Institute.

  The International Year of the Physics:  owing to this event, in 2005 exhibitions were celebrated by the whole Spain with the title of “Einstein in Spain” to those that the  has contributed with the loan of several only and excellent copies to Students' Residence, Cultural Municipal Foundation of Valladolid, Public library of Zamora and Foundation Saws Pambley (León).
